Apply for the TCC “My Dream” Scholarship!

By Nayab Ijaz, 11

Daunting college tuition can be worrisome during the stress of high school, even more so for students with issues regarding their legal status. However, Tulsa Community College offers some relief with its My Dream scholarship which is specifically made to help undocumented students tackle this daunting reality. The My Dream scholarship pays for tuition and fees at TCC for students who are not able to complete the FAFSA due to their documentation status.

A student currently attending TCC on the My Dream scholarship describes her experience with the scholarship as not only a solace financially for her and her family, but mentally as well. (The individual’s name will be kept private due to the sensitive nature of this issue.) Knowing her situation as an undocumented student, calling it “an exhausting and challenging spot to be in,” she actively looked for financial aid opportunities that would accommodate her needs. The My Dream scholarship allowed her some “peace of mind” regarding tuition, along with space to focus completely on her courses, participate in various clubs, and have more time to herself. The scholarship provided a great boost of motivation for her while studying as well, knowing that “the foundation believes in [her] so much they helped fund [her] studies.”

Beyond motivation in academics, motivation to give back to her community in gratitude also dominates her story; she “[hopes] to be able to bring awareness of this to younger students through the Hispanic Association at Southeast campus.” For students who are looking to apply for the scholarship, here are some pieces of advice she offers:

  1. Do not procrastinate on completing the essays and/or application. Own the application process and deem it “the first step towards your future.”
  2. Let your family know about the process and be patient, for it may be something new for them.
  3. Talk to TCC representatives for any information you need. You can start by reaching out to TCC representative Gloria Kirkpatrick (gloria.kirkpatrick@tulsacc.edu).

Eligibility and application requirements can be found on the TCC website under Campus Life > Campus Locations > Education Outreach Center > My Dream, or by searching for the My Dream scholarship. The application is open until May 13, 2022, at 5 p.m.

The My Dream scholarship continues to offer help to any students looking for it. Students with questions about the scholarship are welcome to talk with the CCC advisors for details.
