It’s SHAKA Week!

By Lydia Finch, 10

Every day this week, UHS Leadership has been hosting Spreading Hope and Kindness Abundantly (SHAKA) week! All week, students have been encouraged to participate in dress-up days, volunteer at schools, and participate in fun activities. Throughout the week, students competed in coin wars. Each grade had a bucket for students to put change in, and at the end of the week, the grade with the most coins will pie their admin in the face. SHAKA merch will be available for purchase, and doughnuts and cotton candy will be for sale for $1 on Thursday and Friday during lunch. All proceeds from this fundraising will go to the OKC Children’s Hospital.

Community service hours have also been available every day. Students have been going to a variety of schools throughout the district to work in classrooms, libraries, and offices. Absences are excused and it’s a great and fun way to get service hours and visit your old school. The link to the sign-up can be found on Canvas under the Union High School Activities course.

One popular part of SHAKA week is the kindness wall. Positive comments and sayings will be posted in the activities commons for students to take and share with their friends and fellow classmates. Sam Williams, 2024 Class President, says “Part of SHAKA is spreading kindness around our school and community. The kindness wall helps spread kindness around our school by giving people ideas and methods to be kind or offer little bits of support.” All week, fun activities will be happening in the activities commons, so be sure to stop by and participate!
